The Scammell Crusader was new to the Army in 1975, and this particular lorry served in Iraq in the first conflict with Saddam. John Burton bought it from Jacksons Military Dealers near Doncaster in April 2005. It had 64,000 miles on the clock, and the cab was in poor condition - no surpise after nearly thrity years in the Army! It was restored in Alfreton, Derbyshire and the restoration took four and a half years. The cab has been totally restored with virtually the whole interior being replaced. The seats and dashboard are original.
The chassis was stretched by 6 feet and a new body made in the form of a recovery vehicle. The recovery gear is made by Boniface.
The engine is the original one. This vehicle was used for the first time after its restoration in September 2010 when it did the Limestone Run in appalling rain – and it never missed a beat.
The design of the body and the build of this lorry was done with the help of Damion who has worked for John Burton for many years and whose expertise is very much appreciated.
This is just one of a fascinating collection of different historic commercial vehicles that come to Chatsworth, and their owners are happy to talk to you and to share their enthusiasm with you if you go to visit them.
